Buurabalayji Thalanyji Aboriginal Corporation (Thalanyji) is today marking the 10th anniversary of successfully obtaining the native title rights for the Thalanyji People.
To mark the occasion Thalanyji is hosting two celebrations, concurrently in Onslow and Perth for Members and those involved in the claim process ten years ago.
The initial claim was lodged in 1999 under the 1996 Native Title Act and combined two existing applications and on 18 September 2008 Thalanyji was awarded the Native Title of over 11,120 sqkm of land in West Pilbara, including Onslow.
More than 25 parties were included in the National Native Title Tribunal negotiations including the Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura People and the Thudgari People as well as Government, pastoralists and pearling, fishing, mining and telecommunications industries.
Thalanyji has thrived over the past decade, working on a wide range of community and business projects to continually improve services and support for Thalanyji Members and their community.
Thalanyji now includes Thalanyji Service Stations, Thalanyji Beef, Thalanyji Pastoral, Thalanyji Mechanical, Thalanyji Catering, Thalanyji Towing, Thalanyji Foundation and the Thalanyji Medical Centre will soon be added to the list.
Quotes attributed to Matthew Slack, Thalanyji CEO
“This celebration recognises 10 years since the Federal Court of Australia recognised the Thalanyji people’s land by way of Native Title Determination. This would not have been possible without the tireless work of a handful of members who drove the process from the beginning without any government assistance or financial support”.
The determination has allowed BTAC to develop a thriving enterprise, ensuring a secure financial future for their people”.
